Mike McCarthy was a two-time wrestling All-American at 126 and 142 pounds. In 1975, he compiled a 25-10 record and placed fifth at the NCAA National Championships at 126. As a senior in 1976, McCarthy placed fourth and compiled a 21-8 record in the 142 pound class. That same year he qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials and commanded the University's ROTC detachment. He was selected by the University student newspaper, the Mace & Crown, as one of the school's top ten athletes of the decade (1971-80) He compiled an 88-41 career record at Old Dominion. McCarthy graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1976. He has a MSBA in business administration from Boston University in 1982 and is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia since 1986. He later became a major in the Virginia Air National Guard. McCarthy retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the USAF after 25-plus years of service. |
